Use Notebox to write, edit, and find notes. It is a graphical user interface (GUI) application that's easy to learn and use, and that runs on Windows, Linux, and *BSD.

Notebox is free open source software (FOSS) licensed under the GNU General Public License version 3 (GPLv3).

  1. Use your package manager to ensure that Python 3.6 (or later), APSW, and PySide 2 for Qt 5.12 (or later) are all installed, along with all their dependencies.
  2. Download Notebox from here: Notebox-2.2.6.tar.gz (502KB; MD5 c7398b452553c6006dd828981a9a3d0e)
  3. Unpack the tarball wherever you want, e.g., using tar xvfz Notebox-x.y.z.tar.gz
  4. The executable is To make this runnable from the command line, execute
    chmod +x
    This will only work if Python 3.6+ is in your path. An alternative is to create a tiny shell script, e.g.:
    /your/path/to/bin/python3.6 /your/path/to/Notebox-x.y.z/ &
